Activity Meme
- This activity was part of a peer facilitation week.
- Through this meme, I wished to convey that with digital platforms, it is possible to have differentiated instruction as the needs of the learners are diverse.
- To make learning a memorable experience, as instructors, I feel, one needs to be flexible to incorporate the requirements of variety of learners.
MY REFLECTIONS
-
It is said that a picture is worth 1000 words, sometimes I think a meme is worth more. A meme is a cultural expression through which information that is passed from one person to another. Often, memes include a popular picture along with a statement that is intended to express a layered meaning.
-
Being a social media buff, we live in a time where we compete for attention of the learners. I feel we are more challenged, as educators, to present information in a short saying to help us express our ideas better. According to Lessig (2008, p. 83), “Digital technologies have now removed that economic censor. The ways and reach of speech are now greater. More people can use a wider set of tools to express ideas and emotions differently.” Also, bringing humor in the classroom goes a long way to make learning a joyful experience. I felt thrilled that I was able to bring in my use of social media into the classroom.

Through this activity I also appreciated that with a meme we could say more with less. I chose this meme as I believe my learning/teaching is focused on taking into consideration the various socio-cultural perspectives of students during the process of teaching and learning.
-
However, I realized that this meme can be misunderstood in terms of judgement/prejudice (of language) upon the others if they do not follow a differentiated approach as per requirements of the learners. In addition, this meme may not be meaningful for the reader if they are not familiar with the Lord of the Rings movie series. I feel maybe for next time, I can design a meme with a more 'trendy' concept. Nevertheless, this was a fun activity for me.

I believe that students’ learning can thrive in environments that encourage them to express their opinions and perspectives freely. With advent of digital media, differentiated instruction is possible to encourage students to learn from dynamic environment surrounding them. As a facilitator, I believe one should acknowledge that all students have different learning styles, and their feedback is significant to ensure that the learning experience is enjoyable for both the learner as well as the facilitator.
